The seerah is the biography of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). It is not entertainment and not a nationalist myth. It is the lived Quran: how the final Messenger believed, worshipped, traded, married, fought only as revelation allowed, forgave, and taught. Allah sent him as a mercy to the worlds (see Quran 21:107). Studying his life is how a Muslim learns what mercy looks like in public and in private. This article is an overview for learning. It is not a complete history book, and it is not a fatwa.
For his words in law and manners, see Understanding the Hadith. For the Book he recited, see the Quran.
Why seerah is part of the deen
Allah says that in the Messenger of Allah there is a good example for whoever hopes in Allah and the Last Day and remembers Allah often (Quran 33:21, meaning). An example is not a poster. It is a pattern: how he was truthful before prophecy so that his people called him al-Amin; how he was patient in Makkah; how he built a community in Madinah; how he kept treaties; how he entered Makkah in victory with restraint.
Seerah also protects you from two cartoon versions of the Prophet (peace be upon him). One cartoon makes him only gentle and deletes jihad, law, and warning. The other makes him only a commander and deletes his tears, his service to his family, and his care for the weak. The real seerah holds both, because revelation held both.
We do not draw him. We do not imitate film portraits. We send salawat upon him, we follow his Sunnah, and we defend his honour with knowledge, not with rage that breaks the law of the land or the law of Allah.
Makkan years: calling to Tawhid under pressure
He was born in Makkah in the Year of the Elephant, from the noble house of Hashim, a descendant of Ibrahim through Isma‘il (peace be upon them). He grew as an orphan under the care of his grandfather and then his uncle Abu Talib. He worked as a shepherd and a trader. Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) hired him, then married him, because of his honesty.
At forty, revelation began in the cave of Hira. The first words commanded reading in the name of the Lord who created (see Quran 96:1–5). For years the call was secret, then public: worship Allah alone, leave idols, prepare for the Last Day. The weak were tortured. Some migrated to Abyssinia. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was boycotted, mocked, and offered kingship if he would compromise. He did not compromise Tawhid.
The Year of Sorrow took Khadijah and Abu Talib. Ta’if rejected him and harmed him. He made dua and did not ask for the valley to be destroyed when the angel of the mountains offered that, as reported in Sahih al-Bukhari. Mercy was not weakness. It was strength under command from Allah.
The Night Journey and Ascension (Isra and Mi‘raj) comforted him and, according to the authentic reports, established the five prayers. The Ansar of Madinah pledged to protect him. Then Allah permitted hijrah.
Madinan years: a community with law and mercy
In Madinah he built the mosque, joined Muhajirun and Ansar as brothers, and made a compact with the city’s communities. Revelation now organized prayer in congregation, zakat, fasting, family law, and limits. Battles such as Badr, Uhud, and the Confederates were not a hunt for empire. They were defence and the removal of barriers to the call, under rules that forbade treachery and the killing of non-combatants as the Sunnah details.
The Treaty of Hudaybiyyah looked like a loss to some Companions. It became an opening. Later, when Makkah opened, he generally granted safety. He did not take a personal revenge tour. People entered Islam in crowds. He sent teachers, received delegations, and completed the Hajj from which we take the Farewell Sermon: sacred blood and property, the abolition of pagan usury practices in the manner he taught, the rights of women, and the rope of the Quran.
He died in Madinah after an illness, having left a complete deen (see Quran 5:3). Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was given bay‘ah. The ummah continued. Prophethood ended. Scholarship and political leadership are not prophethood.
His character: what to copy
A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said that his character was the Quran, as recorded in Sahih Muslim. He repaired his shoes. He served his family. He visited the sick. He did not eat reclining as a proud king. He played with children. He was shy, truthful, and brave. He forbade oppression. He established justice even if it was against a noble.
He married in ways that the Quran and Sunnah explain: support, teaching, alliance, and mercy to widows. Mockery of his marriages is often ignorance of seventh-century Arabia and of the legal details. Learn from Muslim scholarship, not from polemics.
He loved the poor. He warned the rich. He did not hoard. When he died, his armour was pledged, as reported in the sahih collections. Zuhd is not unemployment. It is that the dunya is in the hand, not in the heart.
How to study seerah without getting lost
Use a reliable book that cites sources, such as the well-known works taught in masajid. Distinguish Quran and sahih hadith from later stories. Maghazi literature contains useful history and also weak reports. If a story makes you love drama more than Salah, check it.
Read seerah with a map: Makkah, Ta’if, Madinah, Badr, Uhud, Khandaq, Hudaybiyyah, Khaybar, Makkah, Hunayn, Tabuk. Then read how each stage trained the Companions. Then ask: what stage am I in? Am I patient in a Makkan-style test of mockery, or am I responsible in a Madinan-style test of power?
Frequently asked questions
Is seerah the same as Hadith?
They overlap. Hadith is a graded report. Seerah is a narrative built from reports, poetry, and genealogy. Always prefer authentic hadith when they conflict with a popular story.
Can I watch seerah cartoons?
Avoid depicting the Prophet (peace be upon him). Many scholars forbid or strongly dislike image-based depiction of him. Audio and text are safer. Ask a teacher about children’s materials in your community.
How do I send salawat?
Allah commands you to send blessings upon him (see Quran 33:56). Use the formulas taught in the prayer and after the adhan. Do not invent wild phrases. Do not neglect following him while multiplying empty praise.
Walk the path he walked
The seerah ends in following: pray as he prayed, tell the truth as he told it, and be merciful as he was merciful. Continue with akhlaq and Salah. And Allah knows best.
