The Virtues of the Quran: A Healing and a Mercy

The Quran describes itself as a healing and a mercy for the believers (Quran 17:82, meaning). That healing is not a slogan for selling water bottles. It is the effect of Allah’s speech on doubt, hypocrisy, grief, and ignorance when a servant receives it with iman. This article explains the virtues of the Quran in the Quran and authentic Sunnah, what “healing” means and does not mean, and how to seek those virtues without falling into superstition. English meanings are meanings, not a replacement for the Arabic Quran.

See the Quran as miracle and a habit you can keep.

Virtues mentioned in revelation

The Quran is guidance, a clear light, a criterion, and a reminder. It is a blessed Book so that people may ponder (see Quran 38:29). Those who recite it as it should be recited are promised a great reward (see Quran 35:29–30). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said that the best of you are those who learn the Quran and teach it (Sahih al-Bukhari). He said that the one who is skilled in the Quran is with the noble scribes, and the one who recites while it is difficult has two rewards (Sahih al-Bukhari and Muslim).

He compared the believer who recites the Quran to a citrus fruit: good taste and good smell, as in the sahih hadith. Recitation is not only for Ramadan. It is a quality of the believer.

Intercession and the companion of the Quran

There are authentic reports that the Quran will intercede for its companion. That companionship is not a mushaf on a high shelf. It is recitation, ruling by it, and manners from it. Do not expect intercession from a Book you abandoned while you memorised lyrics.

Healing: what it is and is not

Ruqyah with Quran is established. The Companions used al-Fatihah as ruqyah, as in Sahih al-Bukhari. Healing of the chest from waswasah and grief is also real. Healing does not mean you throw away a doctor. Allah sends down medicine and illness. Taking means is Sunnah. Using Quran as a replacement for every medical duty is not tawakkul. It is neglect.

Do not buy numbered “Quranic water” schemes that have no fiqh. Recite, blow with ruqyah as taught, and trust Allah. Do not treat verses as a vending machine.

Manners with the Quran

Sit with respect. Do not place it on the floor. Do not talk over recitation as if it were background noise in a cafe if you can avoid that. When it is recited, listen (see Quran 7:204). If you cannot listen, do not play it as decoration while you watch haram.

Frequently asked questions

Does listening give the same reward as reciting?

Both are rewarded. They are not identical deeds. Recite with your tongue and listen at other times.

I cannot read Arabic yet.

Start with al-Fatihah and short surahs. Use a teacher. Listen and repeat. Do not wait years.

And Allah knows best.
