Ihsan is to worship Allah as though you see Him, and though you do not see Him, you know that He sees you. That definition is not a slogan from a poster. It is the wording of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the Hadith of Jibril, recorded in Sahih Muslim. Islam is the outer submission of the pillars. Iman is belief in the unseen as he listed it. Ihsan is excellence: the quality that turns a valid prayer into a prayer that changes the rest of the day. This article explains ihsan, how it relates to khushu‘ and ikhlas, and how a busy Muslim practices it without pretending to be a saint.
Build it on aqeedah, Salah, and niyyah.
The Hadith of Jibril and the three levels
Jibril (peace be upon him) came in the form of a man and asked about Islam, iman, and ihsan. The Prophet (peace be upon him) answered, then said that this was Jibril who came to teach the people their religion. A Muslim should know all three. Some people have Islam on the tongue and weak iman. Some have knowledge of iman and careless worship. Ihsan is the peak: you do the same salah, but you do it with watchfulness.
Allah is with His servants by His knowledge. He sees the secret and the public (see Quran 67:13–14). Ihsan is to live as if that verse is in front of your eyes when you hold a phone, a contract, or a secret.
Ihsan is not showing off
Riya’ is to worship so that people see you. Ihsan is to worship because Allah sees you. They look similar from far away: both can produce long recitation. They are opposites in the heart. The Prophet (peace be upon him) called showing off a subtle shirk in reports used by the scholars of the heart. The cure is to hide good deeds when hiding is possible, to remember death, and to ask Allah for ikhlas.
Ihsan also includes ihsan to people: excellence in work, family, and speech. Allah commands ihsan (see Quran 16:90). The Prophet (peace be upon him) said Allah has prescribed ihsan in everything, even in slaughter, as in Sahih Muslim. Excellence is a method, not a mood.
How ihsan looks in Salah
You come before the time, not as the imam bows. You make wudu with care. You face the Qiblah. You still your limbs. You recite with tarteel. You pause in ruku and sujud. When you wander, you return. That returning is ihsan for the ordinary believer. Do not wait to pray until you feel a spiritual state. States come and go. The prayer is due.
After salah, sit for dhikr as he sat. Do not bolt as if you have finished a chore. The minutes after taslim are part of the gift.
Ihsan at work, online, and at home
At work, ihsan is honesty in hours and quality. Online, it is not humiliating Muslims for a joke. At home, it is the character the family sees when guests leave. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was the best to his family, as in the sunan. A man who is an angel in the mosque and a tyrant at home has not tasted ihsan.
Ihsan with parents is gentleness even when they are wrong in a worldly matter, while you do not obey them in haram. Ihsan with the poor is to give before they are forced to ask, when you can. Ihsan with animals is not to torture them. The religion is one piece.
Obstacles to ihsan
Hasite: rushing. The culture of speed hates salah. Put salah on the calendar as an immovable meeting. Second: too much mixed entertainment. A heart filled with noise cannot watch Allah. Third: sin that you normalize. Each sin is a stain. Tawbah polishes. Persistence without regret hardens.
Fourth: comparing your hidden sins to other people’s public good. You do not know their end. Work on your record.
A weekly practice
Choose one prayer to pray as if it is your last, as some of the salaf advised. Choose one deed to hide. Choose one tongue-sin to stop. Review on Friday. This is not a new shari‘ah. It is management of the nafs.
Frequently asked questions
Can I reach ihsan if my iman feels weak?
Yes. Ihsan grows by action. Pray, then your feeling may follow. Do not wait for a feeling to obey.
Is ihsan only for Sufis?
The word ihsan is from the hadith of Jibril. Tazkiyah is Quranic. If a path contradicts Quran and Sunnah, leave it. If a teacher helps you with dhikr and manners within the Sunnah, that is not a sect. It is a need.
Continue with sabr and shukr. And Allah knows best.
