Patience and Gratitude: The Wings of the Believer

Sabr is patience. Shukr is gratitude. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said that amazing is the affair of the believer: if good comes he thanks, and that is good for him; if harm comes he is patient, and that is good for him — and that is only for the believer (Sahih Muslim). This article explains sabr and shukr in the Quran, how they work in illness, money, and family, and how to train them without fake positivity. It is for learning, not a fatwa on a medical or marital case.

See ihsan and forgiveness.

Sabr is not passivity

Allah is with those who are patient (see Quran 2:153). Patience is to hold the nafs from forbidden panic, forbidden speech, and forbidden doors. It is also to keep doing the fard. A patient person still goes to a doctor, still looks for work, still seeks a judge if rights are stolen. Tawakkul is not sitting on the floor. Sabr is not agreeing to oppression when you can lift it lawfully.

There is sabr in obedience, sabr away from sin, and sabr with Qadar. All three are needed. A person who is patient with cancer but impatient with salah has understood only one door.

Shukr is not a caption

Gratitude is to recognise the gift, to thank Allah with the tongue, and to use the gift in halal. Wealth with no zakat is ingratitude. Health with no salah is ingratitude. The Quran says that if you are grateful He will increase you (see Quran 14:7). Increase is not always more money. It may be more barakah, more tawbah, more a child who prays.

When you see someone tested, do not say “Alhamdulillah I’m not them” as mockery. Say alhamdulillah and ask protection, and help if you can.

Training

In anger: sit, make wudu, be silent, as the Sunnah teaches. In blessing: prostrate shukr if you know the fiqh, or pray two rak‘ahs, or give sadaqah. Keep a nightly list of three gifts. Make istighfar when you complain in a haram way. Complaint to Allah is dua. Complaint that accuses Allah is a different fire.

Frequently asked questions

I have depression. Is that lack of sabr?

Illness of the mind is real. Take medical means. Still hold to salah as you can. Do not let anyone tell you that medication is automatically lack of tawakkul. Ask a scholar and a doctor.

And Allah knows best.
