Haya is modesty: a quality of the heart that shows on the body, the tongue, and the gaze. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said that haya is part of iman, as in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. He said that haya brings nothing but good. This article explains haya for men and women, clothing and character, and how to practice it online. It is not a campaign to humiliate people. It is not a fatwa on every garment. Schools differ on some details of awrah. Ask a teacher for your case.

Haya is for everyone
Reducing haya to women’s clothing is a mistake. Men are commanded to lower the gaze (see Quran 24:30–31). Men have an awrah. Men sin with the tongue and the screen. A man who lectures women while watching haram has no haya before Allah.
Haya with Allah is to stop when He sees you. Haya with people is not to be crude. Haya that prevents you from asking a fiqh question is not haya. It is a barrier. The women of the Ansar asked.
Clothing and the heart
The Quran and Sunnah legislate covering. The point is not fashion theatre. The point is obedience and reducing fitnah. Do not mock a sister who is learning. Do not mock a brother who is learning. Do not treat hijab as the entire deen while salah is dead. Also do not treat hijab as optional identity. It is part of the law for those it addresses. Learn it properly.
Screens
Most haya battles are now in the pocket. Lowering the gaze includes the feed. Use filters, time limits, and tawbah. If a job requires haram looking, speak to a scholar about leaving.
Frequently asked questions
Is haya shyness that I cannot speak in class?
No. Speak the truth with adab. Do not be vulgar. Those are different.
And Allah knows best.
