Seeking knowledge in Islam is an obligation in what you need to worship Allah correctly, and a path of honour beyond that. The first revealed words commanded reading (Quran 96:1). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said that whoever travels a path seeking knowledge, Allah makes easy for him a path to Paradise, as in Sahih Muslim. This article explains what ‘ilm is, what is fard to learn, how to seek it with adab, and how to avoid the disease of knowledge that inflates the ego. It is for students, parents, and anyone who has been learning only from a phone.

Fard knowledge and extra knowledge
Every Muslim must know the Shahadah, the meaning of Tawhid in a way that protects from shirk, how to purify, how to pray, and the halal and haram of their work and food at a basic level. That is not optional. A trader must learn sales. A doctor must learn what is lawful of treatment. Extra knowledge — tafsir, usul, language — is a communal duty and a personal virtue. Do not skip fard salah to debate advanced kalam.
You are responsible for what you do. Ignorance is not a shield after the proof has reached you. Ask. Sit. Read a little every day as you do with the Quran habit.
Adab of the student
Ikhlas: learn to act, not to defeat your uncle at dinner. Sit with a teacher. Take notes. Ask with respect. Do not interrupt to show you watched a clip. Verify quotes. Sleep enough. Knowledge that destroys your character is a trial. Carry knowledge by practice: salah, honesty, and humility.
The scholars used to travel for a single hadith. You can travel across a city for a weekly class. Treat that class as an appointment with the deen, not as entertainment if the teacher is late.
Women and knowledge
The women of the Ansar were praised for not being shy to ask about the deen, as in sahih hadith. A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) is a pillar of transmission. Seeking knowledge is not a male hobby. It has hijab and mahram rules for travel. It does not have a ban on the mind.
Worldly knowledge
Medicine, engineering, and agriculture that serve people are dignified if the aim is halal. They do not replace shari‘ah. A Muslim doctor who does not know how to pray has inverted the ranks. See deen and dunya.
How to start this month
Pick one book with a teacher or a known institute. Finish a small text on salah. Listen to a tafsir of Juz Amma. Memorise the dua “My Lord, increase me in knowledge” (Quran 20:114, meaning). Review on Friday what you acted on, not only what you saved to a folder.

Is online learning enough?
It can start you. It rarely replaces a living teacher who corrects your salah and your arrogance. Use both.
I am old. Is it too late?
No. Learn what you still need for salah and tawbah. Teach a child a surah. That is knowledge.
