Zakat is the third pillar of Islam. It is not a tip, not a random donation, and not a tax invented by a modern state. It is a right Allah placed in wealth for specified people, a purification for the giver, and a system of social justice. This article explains the meaning of zakat, who pays it, what it is paid on in outline, who may receive it, and how to approach calculation with care. Details of nisab, hawl, and categories of wealth differ in application. Treat this as learning, then confirm your numbers with a qualified teacher or a reliable calculator used by scholars.

What zakat means
The word zakat means growth and purification. Wealth grows in barakah when the due is given. The soul is purified from stinginess. The community is purified from the humiliation of the poor being ignored. Allah pairs salah and zakat again and again in the Quran, so that a Muslim does not imagine that prayer without the due in wealth is a complete deen.
“Take from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them increase.” (Quran 9:103, meaning)
English is a meaning of the verse, not a replacement for the Arabic Quran.
Zakat is fard on those who meet the conditions. Sadaqah is extra. Both are needed. Extra charity does not cancel unpaid zakat, just as extra sunnah prayers do not cancel a missed fard salah.
Who must pay zakat
In summary, zakat is due on a free Muslim who owns wealth above the nisab, for a lunar year (hawl) in many categories, according to the schools. Children and the insane are discussed among the madhhabs regarding whether zakat is taken from their wealth. Do not hide wealth to dodge the due. Do not pay from haram wealth and think it is accepted as zakat. Earn lawfully, then purify.
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent collectors and taught rates. The famous letter to Yemen, reported in the sunan and used by the fuqaha, outlines livestock and other dues. Gold and silver have a nisab. Many scholars treat cash and trade goods as analogous to gold and silver. Agriculture has its own rules. The point for a beginner is: if you have savings, gold, business stock, or crops, you likely have a question to ask, not a reason to ignore.
The rate many Muslims know: 2.5 percent
On gold, silver, cash, and trade goods, the well-known rate is one-fortieth, or 2.5 percent, after nisab and hawl. Livestock and produce have different schedules. Do not apply 2.5 percent to everything blindly. Do not invent 10 percent on a salary every month and call it zakat if it does not match the rules of your school. Monthly auto-giving can be a way to save toward zakat, but the obligation is calculated as the law describes.
Nisab of gold is classically twenty dinars, of silver two hundred dirhams, as used in the fiqh based on hadith. Modern currency is valued against that. Because silver nisab is often lower in today’s prices, some people use gold, some silver. This is a real scholarly discussion. Pick a method with a teacher and be consistent. Do not switch every year to pay less.
Who may receive zakat: the eight categories
Allah names the recipients in Quran 9:60: the poor, the needy, those who collect it, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, those in bondage, those in debt, in the path of Allah, and the traveller cut off. Each category has conditions. You cannot give zakat to just anyone you like, such as a wealthy relative as a gift, or to build something that is not a valid outlet in your madhhab.
Parents and children whom you must already spend on are generally not given zakat to dump your nafaqah duty. The poor stranger, the indebted, and the genuine traveller in need are closer to the verse. Ask before you give a large amount to a campaign that only uses the word “zakat” in the title.
How to calculate with care
Set a date, often a Ramadan or a hijri date you remember. List cash, bank, gold, silver, trade inventory, and receivables you can reasonably collect. Subtract immediate debts that are due, according to the view you follow. Apply nisab. Pay 2.5 percent if that is the correct class. Keep a note. If you are a business owner, inventory valuation needs honesty. If you farm, learn ‘ushr rules.
Zakat al-Fitr is a separate due at the end of Ramadan, on persons, in staple food or its value according to some schools. Do not confuse it with zakat of wealth.
Zakat and the heart
The miser treats money as a lord. The waster treats money as trash. Islam makes money a trust. The Prophet (peace be upon him) warned against hoarding gold and silver without the due, as in sahih reports connected to the threat in Quran 9:34–35. Give with the right hand so the left does not know, as in the hadith of the seven shaded ones (Sahih al-Bukhari and Muslim). Intention is for Allah, not for a plaque.
Frequently asked questions
Is zakat the same as tax?
No. Tax is a state claim. Zakat is worship with specified recipients. Paying tax does not automatically pay zakat, unless a legitimate Islamic authority takes zakat as zakat — which is not the situation of most readers.
Can I give zakat to a mosque building?
Many scholars do not allow zakat for general construction. Some allow certain “fi sabilillah” uses with strict conditions. Do not assume. Ask.
What if I never paid before?
Estimate past years as best as you can, pay, and repent. Allah is Forgiving. Delay is not a plan.
Act this year
If your wealth is near nisab, calculate this week. If it is far, give sadaqah anyway. Learn deen and dunya together. And Allah knows best.
