The believers are brothers (Quran 49:10, meaning). Brotherhood and sisterhood in Islam are not a club of people who look like you. They are a contract of iman: to love for your brother what you love for yourself, as in the sahih hadith. This article explains the meaning of ukhuwwah, its rights, how it is damaged by nationalism and gossip, and how to practice it in a mosque and online. It is for learning, not a fatwa on a community dispute.

One ummah
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said the ummah is like one body: if one limb suffers, the rest suffers with fever and wakefulness (Sahih Muslim). That is not poetry. It is a command to care. Racism, tribalism, and class snobbery that break this body are jahiliyyah, even if they wear Islamic clothing.
Giving the salam, visiting the sick, attending funerals, helping the hungry, and covering faults are from the rights of brotherhood taught in the Sunnah. Do the small ones if you cannot do the large ones.
Nasihah, not humiliation
Advice is given in private when possible. Public shaming is often a nafs project. The Prophet (peace be upon him) would not embarrass a person by name in a gathering if a general reminder would do. Correcting a public bid‘ah has rules for scholars. A beginner should not live as an internet policeman.
Online brotherhood
If your “ummah work” is only arguing, you have not tasted ukhuwwah. Share a meal. Teach a child. Drive someone to Fajr. Money is a test: the one who has it spends; the one who does not still makes dua and service.
Frequently asked questions
Does brotherhood include non-Muslims?
The special brotherhood of iman is for Muslims. Justice and kindness in ordinary dealings extend more widely, as the Quran and Sunnah teach. Do not confuse the two. Do not be cruel. Do not melt the deen.
And Allah knows best.
