Fasting in Ramadan is the fourth pillar of Islam. It is not a diet trend and not only “solidarity with the poor.” It is a fard act of worship: to abstain from food, drink, and marital relations from true dawn until sunset, with intention, for Allah. The month trains taqwa, repairs the relationship with the Quran, and exposes how much of our day is appetite. This guide explains why Ramadan is obligatory, what breaks the fast in outline, how to seek Laylat al-Qadr, and how to keep a spiritual core when schedules are heavy. Details of fiqh belong with a teacher. This is learning, not a fatwa.

Why Ramadan is prescribed
Allah says that fasting was prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may gain taqwa (Quran 2:183, meaning). Taqwa is to place a guard between yourself and Allah’s anger. Hunger is a means. The goal is a heart that refuses haram even when the stomach is full after Maghrib.
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said that whoever fasts Ramadan out of faith and seeking reward, his previous sins will be forgiven, as recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. He said the same about standing in prayer in Ramadan. Forgiveness is not automatic for a person who fasts while insisting on major sins with pride. It is a door. Walk through it with tawbah.
Ramadan is the month in which the Quran was sent down as guidance (see Quran 2:185). That is why tarawih, khatm, and study circles belong to the month. A Ramadan of only food shows and no Quran is a wasted season even if the fast is valid.
Who must fast — and who is excused
Adult, sane Muslims who are able must fast. Travellers may break the fast and make it up, as the Quran allows. The ill may break it. Pregnant and nursing women have detailed rulings: some make up days, some feed the poor, depending on harm and the school. Elderly people who cannot fast may have fidyah. Menstruating women do not fast those days; they make them up. They still eat with dignity and do not treat the excuse as a holiday from the deen. They can do dhikr, give charity, and listen to Quran according to the views on touching the mushaf.
Do not shame someone who is excused. Do not invent excuses to eat. Both are injustice.
What a valid fast needs
Intention: for Ramadan, many scholars say a general intention from the night is required. Learn your madhhab’s wording. Abstention: no eating, drinking, or intercourse from dawn to sunset. Insulting people is not listed like food, but the Prophet (peace be upon him) said that if a person does not give up false speech and acting on it, Allah has no need of his leaving food and drink (Sahih al-Bukhari). The fast of the stomach with a savage tongue is a shell.
Things that commonly break the fast include intentional eating and drinking, and intercourse. Injections, inhalers, and medical issues have long fatwa lists. Do not take a forum comment as a ruling. If you eat forgetfully, the sahih hadith says to complete the fast; Allah fed you. If you eat deliberately, you have a serious problem: tawbah and qada, and in Ramadan some schools mention kaffarah for certain violations. Ask.
Sunnahs that keep the month alive
Suhoor is a blessing, as in Sahih al-Bukhari. Delay it toward dawn without slipping into the forbidden time. Hasten iftar with dates and water as he taught. Make dua at iftar. Pray Maghrib, then eat calmly. Tarawih is a strongly established sunnah of the month. Do not fight the mosque over twenty versus eight until you have prayed with khushu‘. Both numbers have been practiced. Unity in the mosque is also worship.
Give in charity. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was most generous in Ramadan, as in the sahih collections. Pay Zakat al-Fitr before Eid prayer so the poor can eat. Seek Laylat al-Qadr in the last ten nights, especially the odd ones. It is better than a thousand months (see Quran 97). Worship in those nights even if you are tired. A short sincere qiyam can outweigh a year of empty scrolling.
I’tikaf, Quran, and the last ten nights
I’tikaf in the mosque in the last ten is a sunnah he kept. If you cannot stay ten days, stay what you can with the imam’s permission. Cut entertainment. Make a Quran plan you can finish or nearly finish without racing so fast that you understand nothing. Combine recitation and meaning.
After Ramadan
Six days of Shawwal are a known sunnah (Sahih Muslim). More important: keep Salah on time. Keep a smaller fast Mondays and Thursdays if you can. Do not return to a year of abandoned Quran. The test of Ramadan is Shawwal.
Frequently asked questions
Does brushing teeth break the fast?
Toothpaste that is swallowed is a problem. Many scholars allow a miswak. Be careful not to swallow. Ask for details.
Can I swim or shower?
Water entering the throat is the issue, not wet skin. Be careful. Ordinary showering is widely allowed.
I cannot fast for medical reasons. What do I do?
See a doctor and a scholar. Do not harm yourself. Do not skip the conversation and eat in secret from shame. Islam has licenses.
